GALLERY POSSESSION
History of creation
The plan to build a rest and relaxation zone on the campus of the Technical University in Zvolen, under the name "Exchange BAR for BARs", was created on the initiative of students of the Faculty of Ecology and Environmental Sciences in November 2011. The aim of the aforementioned project is to transform the currently unused environment near the main building of the university into a rest zone intended for meaningful leisure and occasional cultural and social activities. The project is being implemented thanks to the financial support of Telefónica Slovensko and in cooperation with the Ekopolis Foundation as part of the Think Big project. The result of several meetings of the implementation team (made up of ecologists, architects and designers) was the idea in 2012 to establish an "open air gallery" called the POSED Gallery (GP), as part of the "Exchange BAR for BARs" project. The leitmotif became the illusion of observing artistic artifacts from a high vantage point. This is how the inspiration for building a perch, i.e. an observation room, arose, where instead of observing or hunting forest animals, visitors will have the opportunity to observe art. GP also tries to point out the traditions of the region of the city of Zvolen and its surroundings, as well as the history of teaching forestry disciplines at the Technical University of Zvolen.
Goal
The GP platform will enable the creation of a communication network of artistic outputs, site-specific, spaces with different meanings and characters. The aim is to create an environment for the presentation of students of individual study departments of the university, to develop cooperation in the field of art with similar institutions with an alternative for both emerging and established young artists. It wants to be a place of direct communication and reception of contemporary art and events in the region. An important element of this specific gallery platform is also the ability to stimulate the creation of completely new, original visual works. The city of Zvolen and the Technical University of Zvolen in terms of infrastructure (culture sector) could have such an alternative place presenting art in the intentions of sustainable use of the landscape and natural resources. GP aims to address and attract the interest of the general public and professionals, the media, as well as potential partners for practical cooperation.
Architectural and design concept GP
When searching for shape solutions, the GP creative team was inspired by the work of architect RB Fuller, who considered the perfection of the shape of a sphere and is considered the author of the most famous geodesic dome.
The geodesic dome represents an ideal shape-construction concept and this is precisely what was used in the gallery design, while it is necessary to point out the individual advantages for choosing the aforementioned construction-technological principle. The geodesic dome is characterized by excellent static properties and, because its construction is light but at the same time unusually strong and solid, it is resistant to strong winds as well as the effects of adverse weather. Another advantage is the low consumption of material for its construction compared to other types of structures, an attractive and timeless design, which also visually corresponds to the architecture of the building of the Technical University in Zvolen, thus becoming the bearer of its "DNA".
